HIH Another chapter that cancer patients and their families get to know is the ‘Hospital system’. To many patient’s, this is a very unfamiliar and complex system to navigate on their own, and requires a lot of hands-on advocacy, guidance and support to ensure that the patient and their caregivers are on the same page throughout this difficult journey.

Sometimes it’s just to help the families understand the structure of the hospital process, the differences between the attending doctors, residence staff/fellows and other parties in the patient care team. In many instances it also involves on site and off site advocacy on behalf of the patients care and needs.

When appropriate, RCCS staff make certain to connect the patient to other hospital liaisons and patient advocate organizations to ensure that the patient’s needs are properly attended to at all times.

RCCS advocates on behalf of cancer patients whose insurance benefits may have been unfairly denied by insurance companies, resulting in compromised or delayed life-saving treatments and/or massive expenditures.

Many insurance companies have no qualms about denying permission for critical procedures, state of the art treatments, second opinions, and expensive medications. Patients are at time unfairly denied coverage for urgent medical care and have to deal with outstanding charges that multiply rapidly.

RCCS, in collaboration with private donors and independent organizations, provides assistance to families who are desperate for help with basic necessities. After careful evaluation of each situation, grants toward housing, travel and food are provided on a case by case basis.

The emergency grants remove burdensome financial pressures from cancer patients and give them the ability to focus exclusively on their journey toward health.

A designated “Care Manager stays in touch with each patient to ensure they have whatever is needed. The care manager's role establishes a main point of contact within the organization, to follow the details of their case, referring them to appropriate departments as necessary, and assure that they are aware of all RCCS services available to them. This streamlines the process, during an otherwise very stressful time for them. The Care Manager also offers emotional support to patients and their families, by providing referrals as well as coordinating resources with other organizations, when necessary, such as mental health providers, physical therapists, wigs, transportation, meals, local medical support, medical equipment, lodging, home-care etc. Care managers are available to support patients and their
families throughout their cancer journey.

Children and siblings of cancer patients are surrounded by severe worries that are too large for their young shoulders to carry. RCCS lightens their days with gifts and activities on special occasions.

RCCS staff and volunteers infuse sunshine into the lives of siblings and children of cancer patients by distributing age-appropriate, valuable gifts on Chanukah, Purim and other occasions throughout the year. Free admission tickets to appropriate Chol Hamoed entertainment and other programs are designed to create joy and spread smiles on the faces of children who are enduring hardship.

RCCS also sends holiday and appreciation gifts to doctors on behalf of cancer patients, so that patients can express their appreciation for their hardworking medical professionals without worrying about obtaining and assembling gift packages.
